Well it feels like we have finally turned the corner, leaving the cold of winter behind us with the arrival of warmer spring weather. We have seen a shift in local species during this season change. Rock lobster fishers – both recreational and commercial – are starting to plan for the coming rock lobster season. Just a reminder that recreational pots now have new regulations to bring them in line with commercial pots. This includes the addition of a seal spike and increased escape gap sizes to 28cm x 5.7cm. Other recreational fishers are starting to get excited with the prospects of new season species. With the northerly winds of late our local surf beaches have been fishing well for salmon, and there should be a few gummy sharks start to move onto local beaches within the following month. We should start to see a few more snapper moving up the Gulf and onto inshore reefs, so the prospects are looking promising! Here’s hoping for a great 2014/15 fishing season!
